The story behind our 2024 carbon footprint

At PGGM, we have an important social responsibility: to help provide good, affordable, comprehensible and sustainable pensions for our clients, the pension funds, and their participants. A good pension means more to our participants if they can enjoy it in a liveable world. And this works both ways: a liveable world is essential to secure good pensions for the future.

Net zero-ambition

This is why we take responsibility. We help our clients contribute to a sustainable future and we play our part in our own operations as well. At PGGM, we have set ourselves a net zero ambition: we aim to reach net zero carbon emissions from our operations by 2050. With our net zero policy, we are taking clear, measurable steps in that direction. Achieving net zero operations is an ambitious goal and it calls for a different way of thinking and working, both within our organisation and across the value chain we are part of. This makes it all the more important to start now with what is already possible. Even though our own footprint may seem limited, every avoided molecule of CO₂ counts.

Step by step towards independence

How does it feel to step onto an escalator when you can hardly see? For blind and partially sighted children, this can be a real challenge. This is why, in 2024, we worked with Bartiméus to organise mobility training at our office. Bartiméus helps children with visual impairments learn to find their way in public spaces. The PGGM building is an ideal place, with escalators, lifts and different floor surfaces to practise real-life situations.

Children aged eight to fourteen were able to practise everyday things in a safe setting, like taking an escalator and moving around a large building. PGGM colleagues supported them by keeping the area clear and sharing practical tips to build confidence. ‘You could see their confidence grow with every step, which makes everything we do worthwhile,’ says colleague Fouad van Viersen.

Three boxes of joy!

This winter, hundreds of PGGM colleagues joined in the Jarige Job gift campaign 2024–2025. For the third year running, we came together to help children whose families cannot afford to celebrate their birthdays. Colleagues in Zeist and The Hague donated gifts, with the campaign in The Hague supported by MN and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy. Together, we filled three big boxes with presents, which Jarige Job gratefully received. These gifts will put smiles on the faces of children who would otherwise miss out on celebrating their special day. Thanks to Stichting Jarige Job, more than 100,000 children in the Netherlands will once again enjoy a real birthday in 2025.

PGGM moves to a sustainable office in Utrecht city centre

PGGM is preparing to move to a new, sustainable office of 24,000 square metres in Utrecht city centre, planned for the end of 2027. The project, ‘De Nieuwe Tuin’, has been developed with a real estate partner and marks an important step towards a climate-neutral future.

The distinctive 1970s building, known for its octagonal shapes, will undergo a major transformation. It will feature a renewed façade, extra connecting staircases, a central patio garden and several rooftop gardens with views across the city. The building is being made future-proof, with attention to energy efficiency, materials, acoustics, indoor climate and accessibility.

Sustainability is at the heart of this project. PGGM aims for a net zero working environment where both the building and the way it is used and managed are sustainable. Its central location offers excellent public transport links, making it easier for employees to leave their car at home.

An attractive employer

The move is part of the Vitruvius accommodation programme, which consists of four parts: developing the new building, the future of the location in Zeist, the design and use of the new office, and the transition for employees.

Colleagues take an active part in the Vitruvius Forum, sharing their views on atmosphere, design and wellbeing facilities. This helps us create a workplace that reflects how we want to work in the future and makes people feel at ease.

Arnold Veenema, Manager Facility Management and Real Estate, says: ‘A location with the best public transport connections in the Netherlands, surrounded by shops, sports facilities and terraces, and fully ready for the future, which makes us an attractive employer.’

A step towards net zero

With this move, PGGM demonstrates how sustainability, good employment practices and future-focused working go hand in hand. With this move, PGGM shows that sustainability, good employment practices and future-focused working go hand in hand. The new sustainable office will not only be a modern, inspiring place to work, but also reinforces PGGM’s role as a frontrunner in the financial sector. This relocation is a great example of how organisations can contribute to a greener future.

Innovation at PGGM: driving progress together

At PGGM we are building future-proof services together. Our Innovation & Research department plays a key role, developing new products and services for our clients and their participants. With a clear focus on Customer, Culture and Connection, they deliver innovation that truly works.

  • Customer: We develop solutions that improve insight and ease of use for participants, such as ‘de Pensioenchecker’.

  • Culture: We give colleagues across PGGM the tools and inspiration to work with innovation themselves, through workshops and inspiration sessions.

  • Connection: We bring the outside world in by working with universities, partners and other pension funds.

Our innovation propositions

Digital services

Our services are becoming increasingly digital. We aim to make our products accessible at any time and through various channels. Working together and connecting with digital ecosystems help us to serve participants even better.

Exploration & Research

Through Exploration & Research, we identify trends such as digitalisation, artificial intelligence and changing regulations. We share these insights within PGGM and work closely with the business to develop applications that support our strategic goals. This way, we act as a gateway for new products, services, digital solutions and business models.

The Data Lab

The Data Lab supports PGGM in its transition towards becoming a data-driven organisation. We work in a facilitative and demand-driven way, in multidisciplinary teams, on concrete business cases. Together, we look for smart and secure ways to use data to deliver better services. For example, digitalising investment processes or exploring opportunities with AI and cloud technology. For us, technology is always a means to an end, never a goal in itself.

Bokskalis Beach Clean Up

In the summer of 2024, 48 dedicated PGGM colleagues gathered on the Dutch coast for a special reason: armed with bin bags, litter pickers and plenty of enthusiasm, they took part in the Boskalis Beach Clean Up 2024 through our social engagement programme, Bundel.
